Most people compare extensions by length and shade, then by price. They are the easiest details to read on a product page and the least useful for judging hair. Two bundles at the same length and shade can look very different a month later. Here is what actually separates them.
It is not length and color
Length is a measurement. Color is a label. Neither tells you where the hair came from, what was done to it, or how it was built into a weft, tape tab or clip piece. Two 22" bundles labeled black can differ in every way that matters. One may be raw hair from a single donor with the cuticle intact. The other may be dyed and coated to look similar on the day it arrives.
We have installed extensions in East Islip since 2011, and we sell the hair we install. Length and shade come at the end of a consultation. The hair comes first.
Hair selection and donor characteristics
The starting point is the donor. Single-donor hair means the whole bundle came from one person, so the strands share one natural tone and one texture. Single-donor does not by itself mean the cuticle is intact; that is a separate question worth asking. Our Genius Wefts are raw single-donor hair with the cuticle intact and aligned in one direction. Our traditional sewn-in wefts are cut from one donor, then wefted. Our Premium Clip-In Extensions are made from raw, unprocessed single-donor ponytail hair, and the supply is limited.
Cuticle direction is hard to fake. When every strand runs root to end the same way, the hair moves and brushes the way growing hair does.
Processing: raw hair vs dyed hair
Raw means the hair has never been chemically processed: no dye, no acid bath, no silicone coating, so a stylist can still tone or lift it. Dyed hair has been color-processed to reach a target shade. Here is how our shades break down:

Natural Virgin Black: raw, never dyed. Reads as a deep natural black or off-black.

Soft Brown: raw, never dyed. Naturally lighter brown donor hair.

Jet Black 1B: dyed. This hair has been color-processed to reach 1B, so it is not raw, virgin or unprocessed.

Dark Brown: the natural, undyed donor shade of The Halo, the only shade that piece comes in.
Jet Black 1B is offered on our traditional sewn-in wefts, in Straight and Natural Wavy, and on our Natural Wavy Clip-In Extensions. Genius Wefts come only in the two raw shades. Premium Tape-In Extensions are sold in the natural donor shade, natural black to dark brown, and Premium Clip-In Extensions come in natural black and brown tones. Neither is dyed. A dyed shade is not a fault, but you should know which you are buying before you order.
Construction
Weft seam. Our Genius Wefts measure 0.8 mm thick at the seam and 1.7 mm tall, the flattest weft construction we offer. There is no bulky track or thick machine seam, and the weft can be cut to any width without unraveling. Our traditional wefts are a sewn-in weft track, made to order for each client.
Return hair. Return hair is the short hair that folds back over the top of a seam. Genius Wefts have none, so nothing presses against the scalp.
Tape tabs. Premium Tape-In Extensions come pre-attached to thin adhesive tabs, sandwiched around a small section of your own hair for a flat placement. Each pack is 50 g in 20 pieces, and the tape can be reused if properly removed and re-taped.
Clip wefts. Both of our clip-in sets are double drawn and single wefted, on comfortable, secure clips. Double drawn means the shorter strands were sorted out before wefting. Single wefted means each piece is one layer of weft. Premium Clip-In Extensions are also made with full ends. Sets are built from pieces 4" to 10" wide, with 2.5" to 3" mini front pieces in the larger sets.
The halo wire. The Halo is a single 95 g piece on an invisible, adjustable wire that rests just above the crown, hidden under your own hair. Nothing clamps, glues or attaches to the roots.
Density and luster
Density is how much hair there is and how it is distributed from root to end. A weft that is full at the top and thins to wisps at the bottom will not read as your own hair. Each Genius Weft weighs approximately 50 g, roughly a third of a head.
Luster is the finish: how much shine the hair carries. It has to match your own hair, or the hair reads as an extension. On our traditional wefts you choose a luster level, Silky / Fine, Balanced / Medium or Dense / Coarse, matched to your own density and finish. Premium Clip-In Extensions can be made anywhere from super fine and silky to coarse and low luster.
Texture and why raw bundles are never identical
We carry two standard textures. Straight is a true natural straight, smooth from root to tip with a soft bend at the ends. On our traditional Straight wefts, because the raw shades are unprocessed, the hair holds a set curl and returns to straight afterward. Wavy is a loose, imperfect natural S-wave that blends with most natural textures. Deep Wavy is a custom texture on Premium Clip-In Extensions.
Raw single-donor hair varies slightly from donor to donor in wave pattern and exact tone. That is not a defect. It is the signature of hair that came from one person and was left as it grew. It is why we recommend buying a full clip-in set in a single order. Tone varies too, which is why we match shade to the mid-lengths and ends of your natural hair, not the roots.
How quality shows at the install and the move-up
On installation day, almost any hair looks good. The differences show later. A flat seam with no return hair lies closer to the head and is easier to hide. Hair whose strands all run root to end brushes out cleanly from the ends up. Raw hair gives your stylist room to tone or lift it to close a shade gap.
The move-up is the real test. With proper care, Genius Wefts can be moved up and reinstalled multiple times over 6 to 12 months of wear. Premium Tape-In Extensions are re-taped at each move-up and last up to 12 months. The Halo has no move-ups, because nothing is attached to the roots, and lasts one to two years. Hair that comes out for a move-up still smooth, still holding its texture and still full at the ends was selected well. All of those lifespans depend on care, which our FAQ covers.
What to look for when comparing
Before you look at the price, ask these questions.
- Is the hair from a single donor, with the cuticle intact and aligned in one direction?
- Is this shade raw or dyed? A seller who knows their hair can answer in one word.
- Has the hair been through an acid bath or been coated in silicone?
- How thick is the weft seam, and is there return hair?
- How much does each weft, pack or piece weigh, and are the ends full?
- Can you choose a luster level to match your own hair?
- Does the seller acknowledge that raw bundles vary, or promise that every bundle is identical?
- Does the seller install the hair they sell?
